The St. Lawrence Beluga Recovery Plan

The St. Lawrence beluga is endangered. A committee of experts drew up a list of threats and limiting factors for this population along with a list of actions necessary for the recovery of this population. These actions will also benefit human health, as well as the St. Lawrence in general.

The five proposed strategies:

  • reduce toxic contaminants
  • reduce disturbance
  • prevent ecological catastrophes
  • monitor the state of the population
  • investigate other possible obstacles to beluga recovery

The Beluga Committee was established in 1996 to supervise and ensure implementation of the Recovery Plan. To this end, the Committee revises and updates the Recovery Plan every three years. The Committee evaluates the focus—orientation and pertinence of actions that have been implemented—and progress, in relation to established deadlines and objectives. Finally, the Beluga Committee evaluates the entire implementation of the plan, its strong points and points that have been overlooked.

All governmental and non-governmental players will have to combine their efforts in order to reach the objectives of the St. Lawrence Beluga Recovery Plan and ensure proper monitoring. To obtain a copy of the St. Lawrence Beluga Recovery Plan
